Raven Rock to High Rock

6.4 miles out and back

Enjoy this hike on the Appalachian Trail that features two overlooks!

From Smithsburg, travel Raven Rock Road Rt. 491 approximately 2.0 miles. Be on the lookout for AT crossing signs and park alongside the road. Once parked, travel North on the AT. This section of trail is open year-round and dogs on leash are welcome Generally considered a moderately challenging hike, due to a steep first 0.6 mile, this trail is popular for hiking, rock scrambling, and trail running. Enjoy the first vista at Raven Rock only 0.4 miles up the trail. After taking in the view of the valley, including the Town of Smithsburg, return to the trail. At the 0.6 mile mark the trail turns into an easy and relatively flat 2.6 miles and ends at High Rock for a spectacular view.

Dixie Eatery is your comfort food headquarters. One of the oldest businesses in Smithsburg, the Dixie Eatery is where locals go to enjoy a hearty breakfast, run into a friend and catch up on the latest town news. Misty Meadow Creamery

Misty Meadow Farm Creamery will be sure to satisfy your sweet tooth with its huge variety of flavors and seasonal favorites made right on the farm. Phil and Jerry’s

Phil & Jerry’s Meats & More is a Smithsburg staple, serving up quality meats and meals since 1993. Owned by the Hott family, the small shop packs a big punch with a variety of meat, fish, made-to-order meals, local dairy products, and other groceries. It’s the area’s go-to place for meat lovers, summer grill party shoppers and picking up that meal on the go!

Rocky’s Pizza

Rocky’s New York Pizza has been serving up home-style Italian food at great prices in Smithsburg for more than 30 years. Vince’s Pizza

Vince’s New York Pizza offers a unique twist on the traditional pizzeria: It’s the only restaurant around to offer both delicious Italian cuisine and traditional Mexican dishes. Opened by Roberto Gonzalez in 1989, Vince’s has been featured in the National Pizza Magazine and is an established fixture in the community. From sponsoring events, to rewarding local students for their academic achievements, the eatery is a local Smithsburg favorite.

The Wolfe’s Den is known for its classic bar food, friendly service and great hometown atmosphere. It’s one of Smithsburg’s oldest businesses and is a favorite hang out spot for locals and visitors. It’s hard to leave without a smile–and a few new friends!

This one-of-a-kind store is loaded with unique finds and a great place to shop for gifts. The Trading Post also hosts events featuring local artists, craft makers and folklorists from around the tri-state region.

The Artists Palatte Hair Salon And Gallery

The Artist’s Palette Hair Salon and Gallery is a unique business that doubles as an art gallery and hair salon. The gallery features a number of regional artists’ work for sale, including Stacey Seabright, Octavia Bradford and Melissa Fell. The salon offers a range of services catering to all different hair types.

Mark Poole Pottery

From lamps to travel mugs to decorative baskets, each of the beautifully designed and crafted pieces in Mark Poole’s shop is as singular as the artist himself. Mark specializes in a type of low-firing process inspired by traditional Japanese raku firing, which creates a very unique finish to wares. Known throughout the Maryland/Virginia region, Mark has won several awards for his work. Come enjoy the art–and the view from his shop overlooking the orchards and farms in the region.

Skeeter’s Guns

Located just off Main Street, Skeeter specializes in buying and trading new and used guns and is a great place to get all your firearms questions answered. 

Smithburg Tractor Society

Smithsburg Tractor Society was founded in 2013 and is devoted to historic agricultural production practices and educating others about the town’s history. Headed up by local fireman Chandler Fishack, the group restores historic tractors and other equipment puts them back into service. The society produces a variety of good for purchase including cornmeal, jam and honey. You can find the society at just about every local fair during the summer season, make an appointment to visit the headquarters on Main Street year round.

Craving a fresh bakery treat? Or a hot meal on the go? Trackside Kitchen has something for just about everyone–including customers on a gluten free diet! This family-run shop is always churning out the goodies and adding new items all the time. Stop by for a meal or bakery item, or shop in Trackside’s grocery aisles to pick up the goods and make your own!

Willow Blue

Willow Blue is a photography and creative arts studio that is a community focal point of activity. The studio takes walk-ins and appointments for family-friendly arts and crafts activities, and offers regular classes. Activities include kids paint and craft events, adult paint nights, crocheting classes, digital photography workshops and much more. The studio also has locally-made items such as handbags and jewelry for sale.

Gardenhour Orchard

Gardenhour Orchard is a 4th generation family farm, founded in the late 1800’s. The farm specializes in traditional fruit production such as apples, peaches, corn, strawberries and raspberries and many others! They offer pick your own strawberries, blueberries throughout the summer months and into early fall. Located just off Rt. 64, headed toward Ringgold, Gardenhour Orchard is a must stop for locals and visitors alike. 

Ivy Hill Farm

Ivy Hill Farm is a sixth-generation family-owned farm most known for its fresh, unpasteurized apple cider and other apple products. The year-round market specializes in seasonal produce including apples, peaches, and cherries from the orchard, as well as offers meats, dairy and other products from around the region. Greenhouses are open during the summer season offering annuals & perennials and the farm’s friendly staff creates pre-made or personalized gift baskets for any occasion. The farm also regularly hosts weekend festivals and holiday events.

Lewis’ Orchard

Lewis Orchards is a family-owned, 4th-generation farm and market providings seasonal fruits and vegetables and locally-made pantry products. In season, visitors can buy fresh strawberries, cherries, peaches, nectarines, plums, apples, pears and vegetables.

Mountain Valley Orchard

Mountain Valley Orchard is a family owned and operated farm since the mid 1800’s. Approximately 1.2 miles from the center of Smithsburg, MD, Mountain Valley offer a wide array of fruits, vegetables and many other home-made goods. 

Red Heifer Winery

The Red Heifer Winery is located on 56 scenic acres with breathtaking views of Catoctin Mountain and draws visitors from all over the D.C., Maryland and Virginia region. With live music on the weekends during the summer and fall and cozy, heated outdoor igloos for those colder months, the winery is a unique getaway any time of the year. Every Red Heifer wine is tenderly crafted and processed, fermented, aged, and bottled on-site. The wines have garnered accolades including several Comptroller Cup and Governor Cup medals, as well as winning the 2019 Best in Class Award for Fruit Wine and Gold Medal for its Blueberry Wine.
